Where Theatre
Meets Tavern
From Page, To Pub, To Stage
The London pub — more than just a drinking establishment, it’s a national institution. A place where strangers become community, stories flow as freely as the pints, and everyone leaves richer in spirits (in more ways than one).
In The Midnight Bell, Matthew Bourne’s evocative new production at Sadler’s Wells, that same spirit fills the stage. Inspired by the pages of renowned novelist Patrick Hamilton, the show brings to life the stories of ten lonely souls as they drift in and out of smoky, shadowy pubs in 1930s Soho.
It’s a world that feels strangely familiar to us at Joshua’s Tavern.
Ghosts Of The Past
Our Corner of Soho
Named after that charming rogue Sir Joshua Reynolds — a character who wouldn’t be out of place in Hamilton’s tales — our tavern has always embraced the art and theatre of this neighbourhood. From the mural scenes of 1800s silliness and debauchery that line our walls, to the eclectic characters who pass through our doors today, we lean into the poetic chaos of Soho’s history.
The Shoot
When a few cast members from The Midnight Bell popped in for a gin and a photoshoot, it felt like the perfect fit. Meet Hannah Kremer as Jenny Maple, Cordelia Braithwaite as Netta London, and Edwin Ray as Ernest Ralph Gorse — three of the fourteen performers from Matthew Bourne's dance company, New Adventures, who bring this production to life.
