About the story:

Natalya Petrovna is young, wealthy — and restless. Trapped in a comfortable but uninspiring marriage to her well-meaning, absent-minded husband, she finds herself captivated by her son’s new tutor, a charming young man from Moscow. 

Yet her infatuation is complicated when he begins to flirt with Vera, Natalya’s ward, the girl she once regarded as a daughter, but now sees as a rival. As passions rise and loyalties fracture, what unfolds is a tender and piercing exploration of longing, regret and the ache of fading youth. 

In this elegant adaptation by Brian Friel, the emotional intricacies of love and desire are brought vividly to life on the intimate Donmar stage.
