The Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum

For the first time in nearly 1,000 years, the Bayeux Tapestry is returning to England. Following a historic agreement with France, the 70-metre-long embroidery, depicting the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest of 1066, will be on loan to the British Museum from September 2026 to July 2027.

A £20 deposit per person is required at the time of booking and will be deducted from your final bill. Your exhibition tickets will be provided approximately four days before your visit.

About the exhibition

No year in English history is more studied, more debated or more present in the national imagination than 1066. The Tapestry is both a remarkable work of art and an extraordinary historical record, offering a vision of life in 11th-century England from castles and warfare to clothing, food and the ships that crossed the Channel.
Likely commissioned by a Norman patron and made by English embroiderers working from manuscript drawings in Canterbury, the Tapestry is one of the wonders of the medieval world. This monumental embroidery tells the dramatic story of a moment
that changed England forever,the last time England was successfully invaded,
and the year from which the modern monarchy dates itself.
