Van Eyck: The Portraits at the National Gallery

For the first time in history, all of Jan van Eyck's known painted portraits are brought together in one place. Only once, only at the National Gallery.

Lunch & Culture

The Londoner is a hotel member of the National Gallery. This autumn, Whitcomb's makes it easy to pair a visit to Van Eyck: The Portraits with à la carte lunch or dinner, a short walk from Leicester Square. 

Book a table from the à la carte menu and your exhibition ticket to Van Eyck: The Portraits is included. A £20 deposit per person is required at the time of booking and will be deducted from your final bill. Exhibition tickets will be sent by email ahead of your visit.

About the exhibition

Portraiture as we know it begins with van Eyck. His vision and skill launched painting into a new era of unrivalled realism, watchful eyes, a hint of stubble, wrinkles, flushed cheeks. Van Eyck captured his subjects in all their intimate detail. Though these people sat for their portraits 600 years ago, they feel alive today.  

Van Eyck: The Portraits brings together all nine of the artist's known painted portraits from across Europe, making up half of his surviving works worldwide. They are not kings, queens and aristocrats, they are successful craftsmen, merchants and the artist's own relatives. This is a story of people, and the moment when access to art widened. 

The exhibition marks the first and only time these works can be brought together, and it can only happen at the National Gallery.

Whitcombs:
Lunch: Monday – Friday: 12pm – 2:30pm

Dinner: Monday - Friday: 5pm - 10pm
 

The National Gallery:
Open Daily: 10am - 7pm

Friday lates until: 9pm
